Tigers Go Out with a Bang

The Trinity football team was looking at its worst heading into its last two games of the season. Morale was down, practices seemed dreary and unmotivated. But all this changed when it came to Saturday's game vs. Centre. Centre was on the brink of a conference title and all they had to do was beat Trinity at home and it was over. Little did they know, the Tigers were not going to lose their last home game. Everyone played lights out including the seniors who were playing there last home game ever. Trinity came out and dominated Centre lead by senior running back Chris Baer who showed his true ability in this game. Coming off this win the Tigers went into their last game against Austin College in Sherman, Texas. The Tiger got off to an early lead and did not look back as they destroyed the Roos in a blowout victory. Overall it was an exciting year of Trinity Football ending with a 7-3 record. The Tigers only have high hopes for next season as many of their starters are returning. I enjoyed writing this blog and I hope you enjoyed reading it. See you next season.

Tigers are Struggling

Coming off a playoff ending loss to DePauw, Trinity was down but still wanted to salvage some pride the next week against Azuza Pacific. Having no idea what this team was going to be like, Trinity practiced as hard as they could for this home game. Azuza Pacific is a NIAA team that is able to give out scholarships so it was clear they were going to have a different type of athlete. With Dickinson sidelined with a concussion, Robert Davidson stepped in and struggled against a superior opponent. Azuza came out firing and it seemed like they couldn't be stopped. The Tigers ended up losing 55-27 in one of the worst home losses in Trinity University history. It seems that all is lost but the future is bright for the Tigers as they are a very young team. Next week the Tigers will go against another good team in Centre and one can only hope that they can salvage a win before the end of the season.

Tough Loss in Indiana

The Tigers came off a big win heading into DePauw on Saturday. With freezing conditions, Trinity stepped into a rough stadium where home-field advantage was very clear. The Tigers were penalized for every little mistake while DePauw seemed to be playing perfect. DePauw was down 10-6 going into the half while Dickinson sustained a concussion causing junior Rob Davidson to come in at quarterback. Things looked good at first, but once the second half came, it was ugly to say the least. DePauw unexpectedly ran all over the Trinity defense while the offense just couldn't get anything going. The Tigers ended up losing 26-18 which put an end to the Tigers playoff hopes going into the final stretch of the season. Though there is much disappointment from this loss, things look good for the future. Most of the Tigers team consists of sophomore's or freshmen who are receiving playing time more than usual. This is the one positive light to a very dark weekend in Indiana. Also, Dickinson seemed to be feeling better and Trinity can expect him to return more ready than ever as long as he can hold off Davidson. It's an interesting future for the Tigers but one can only hope for the best.

Blowout at E.M. Stevens

The Tigers came off a hard working bye week with a world of confusion when it came to the starting quarterback position. Dickinson had started two winning games but with junior Rob Davidson coming off an ankle injury, the Tigers were unsure who would start against Sewanne. After changing the starter to Rob Davidson in last week’s practice, Dickinson stepped his game up. The coaches saw this effort from him and made a serious coaching move that they would not regret. Coming into Saturday’s game, the coaching staff put all their trust in the sophomore and it paid off. Dickinson stepped in with a dominating performance leading to a 40-0 victory over the Sewanee Tigers. Dickinson threw one TD pass to Caleb Urban but the true standouts were the Trinity backfield of Chris Baer and Al Furlow. The tandem combined for a total of 161 yards rushing along with 3 touchdowns proving that their speed/power combination works. The defense also stepped up shutting down a less than stellar Sewanee offense holding them to 42 total yards. A standout on the defense was defensive lineman Jonathan Alexander who had a sack along with a safety. Another standout was sophomore cornerback Tyler Barrett who had an interception returned to the Sewanee 1 yard line. Coming off this huge win, the Tigers are prepared to head down to Indiana to face DePauw who leads the conference in offense. This will be the first real challenge for the Tigers defensive unit. The coaches are excited to see what this great defense can do against a powerhouse offense and how quarterback Pat Dickinson can show his leadership in such a season-defining game.

Dickinson Steps in as Leader

Taking on Millsaps with an undefeated record, the Trinity Tigers were unsure of who their starting quarterback would be. The coaches decided that senior Jeremy Staska would start the game but would alternate series with sophomore Pat Dickinson. The tigers struggled offensively in the game with their only points scored by a kick return from wide receiver Caleb Urban. The defensive unit was stout but in the end, without offensive production, the Tigers gave up 28 points losing to the Millsaps Majors 28-7 on the road. After this loss, the Tigers needed to re-evaluate who was going to lead this team for the rest of the year. After a rough week in practice, the coaches named Dickinson as the starting quarterback heading into their first home game vs. Birmingham Southern College. With high hopes, the Tigers entered their fifth game with a 3-1 record and high hopes for the young quarterback. Dickinson showed veteran leadership in the game and led the Tigers to a 41-14 victory. Dickinson had one touchdown pass along with two rushing touchdowns (one shown in the image above). This game should seal him into the starting role and going into the bye week, Trinity has high hopes for the season and the possibility of a SCAC title. With the Tigers young players becoming comfortable in their starting roles, there are only positive thoughts heading into the crucial bye week. After this well needed rest, Trinity will host Sewanee next weekend and show what they are made of against a tough opponent.

Position battles + young players = unefeated

Coming into their first game, the Trinity Tigers had no idea what was going to happen. The team was injury plagued throughout training camp losing their starting safety (Bobby Adamson) and the starting quarterback (Jeremy Staska) was dealing with a hurt hamstring. With their toughest schedule in years, the Tigers headed off to McMurry for their first game with high hopes for Staska to be their guy. Another aspect worrying the coaches were three starting freshman, OT Tino Hong, K Garret Beil, and P Kyle Trella. Within the first half, Staska was pulled because of his hamstring which caused junior, Robert Davidson to come in to take over the offense. Robert came into the game and pulled off a scary win of 31-26. The game was one by a miraculous strip of the ball from senior running back Al Furlow on a McMurry defender. With this came a position battle at the quarterback position between Robert Davidson and sophomore Pat Dickinson. With this battle came a start for Rob Davidson against Texas Lutheran University in Seguin. The Tigers struggled against the Bulldogs but won the game with a last second field goal by freshman Garret Beil. With high hopes, the Tigers went into a great week of practice ready to travel to Tennessee to take on Rhodes College, a team that had upset the Tigers two years ago. Coach Mohr made the decision that Davidson would be the team’s starter against Rhodes and the team looked at him as leader. On a muddy field, Davidson came out on the first drive firing. Unfortunately, on a routine run, Davidson suffered a high ankle sprain causing sophomore Pat Dickinson, who has never played a down in college football, to put the weight of the team on his shoulders. With the season on the line, Dickinson came in and showed his skills going 18-22 with 265 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Also contributing were starting running back Chris Baer with 16 rushes for 123 yards. The Tigers dominated Rhoades with a 40-19 win and the first blowout of the season. With Staska’s injury healed, the question now is whether he or Dickinson will start against Millsaps, which is considered the game of the year In the SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference). If you remember this is the team that Trinity pulled the famous Mississippi miracle against two years ago. This is the first time the Tigers will travel to Mississippi since that game. Also, Coach Mohr has come to say that there could be two possible freshman All-Americans in K Garret Beil and P Kyle Trella. So the questions to be asked are who will start against Millsaps? This will be determined in a hard week of practice which the coaches will make a big decision. Will Trinity come out and show that they are the best team in the SCAC? Will the injury plagued defense be able to stop the high powered Majors offense? All the questions will be answered this week.
